Many older and out-of-print books are in the public domain, and are therefore available in full text online for free.
Sometimes the best way to get an accurate snapshot of a time period is to look at materials that came out during that time period. Try it out for yourself. Use the "Year from" and "Year to" options to create a date range.
Remember that a book published during any time period may still be about an earlier time period, (e.g. an interior design book published in 1948 might be about 18th century design) so check that the subject of the book still looks relevant.
