AlgiKnit is a biomaterials research group based in New York developing wearable textiles from readily abundant biopolymers. Their aim is to operate in a closed loop product lifecycle, utilizing materials with a significantly lower environmental footprint than conventional textiles, to bring sustainable bio-based textile alternatives to the footwear and apparel industries.
AlgiKnit grew out of BioEsters, the winning team from the 2016 BioDesign Challenge.
AlgiKnit's research is funded by The Fashion Institute of Technology, and they continue to partner with research institutions like Columbia University and Brookhaven National Laboratory, to explore the synthesis and chemical modification of biopolymers, and test the tensile properties of materials.
