New York: People, Places and Things

How you research a store--where you look, how much information you find--will vary depending on factors, including

• Is the store still in business? If not you probably have to look in older sources to find the most and detailed information.
• Try some of the FIT Library databases like  New York Times Historical
• Is/was the store mainly located in New York or more widely known? Think local! Local newspapers, magazines, TV, organizations, blogs may pick up more info than a national publication would.
• NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission publishes reports on retail store-rich neighborhoods (like Ladies' Mile, volume 1 and volume 2) and specific buildings (like the Lord & Taylor building)  that typically include a history of the store itself.
