Sample page basics

In MLA 8th ed., your citations are organized in a "Works Cited" list at the end of your research paper or project. For citation format and examples, see Citation examples pages on this guide.

Your "Works Cited" list:

  • Includes sources that you "borrow from" and, therefore, cite within your research paper or project (MLA Handbook 20)
  • Does not include works that you consulted but did not cite. However, your instructor may request, or approve, a broader "Works Consulted" list, including sources that you cite within your paper as well as sources that you consulted but did not cite.
  • Some instructors may call the "Works Cited" or "Works Consulted" list a "Bibliography". Ask your instructor for clarification, if needed.

Format of "Works Cited" list:

  • Begin on a new page, separate from your text, at the end of your paper and after endnotes, if you have any.
  • As with the rest of your paper, use 1" margins on all sides, with your last name and page number continuing in the upper header on the right. Use legible font, such as Times New Roman, in 12 pt. size.
  • Title of page is Works Cited, centered and without bold, italics, underline or quotes.
  • Sources are interfiled alphabetically by first word of citation, usually the author's last name or the title.
    • When alphabetizing by title, ignore the initial A, An or The.
  • For multiple works, order entries alphabetically:
    • If by same author, include author's name in the first entry; then type three hyphens in place of author's name for following works.  Follow with a period.
    • If citing the same author subsequently with additional author/s, repeat name in full.
  • Do not separate by category (books, magazine articles, websites, etc.); all are interfiled alphabetically in one list.
  • Double space all entries.
  • Indent the second and any following lines of each entry 1/2 inch from the left margin, creating a hanging indentation. In some digital contexts, as here, this is not possible.  In that case, leave extra space between entries.  (MLA Handbook 112)

MLA Citation Generator

*Remember to double-check each citation!  Did you notice there was a slight mistake in this one?  (There's an extra period after "Harold".) Citation generators can be helpful and save time but since they rely on algorithms they often have mistakes in them!  Check that all the author's names are correct and check for capitalization errors.
