ChatGPT, AI, and Information Literacy

August 8, 2025

OpenAI announces ChatGPT-5, which, according to its homepage, "Not only outperforms previous models on benchmarks and answers questions more quickly, but—most importantly—is more useful for real-world queries. We’ve made significant advances in reducing hallucinations, improving instruction following, and minimizing sycophancy, while leveling up GPT‑5’s performance in three of ChatGPT’s most common uses: writing, coding, and health."

About ChatGPT

ChatGPT is OpenAI's best-in-class generative AI chatbot. ChatGPT stands for Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer. It is, of course, the chatbot that got everyone talking about generative AI and taking it seriously in high education and the workplace.

As of June 2025, the free version of ChatGPT utilizes the GPT-4o model, which was released in May 2024. This model was trained on data up to October 2023. However, it can access the internet to provide real-time information when needed. To utilize this feature, you can either phrase your query to prompt a web search or click the "Search" button located below the text box. When ChatGPT is retrieving real-time data, you'll see a "Searching the web" message, indicating that it's accessing current information.

You can use custom versions of ChatGPT that combine instructions, extra knowledge, and any combination of skills.
