Advanced Search Tips

EXAMPLES:

To find books on interior design or architecture during specific decades, in Advanced Search, type each term in the "SUBJECT" fields. Please note decades are always spelled out in the subject fields of catalog records. Interior Decoration and Architecture are common subject terms denoting Interior Design.

Interior Decoration (in subject) and 20th Century (in subject)
Architecture (in subject) and 19th Century (in subject)
Modern (in subject) and Architecture (in subject)
Architecture (in subject) and Philosophy (in subject)

If you receive too many results with the above strategy, you can limit your search by typing decade or date into the TITLE field, while keeping Interior Decoration or Architecture in the SUBJECT field.

1920s (in title) and Interior Decoration (in subject)
1960s (in title) and Architecture (in subject)

Finding "pictorial works" or "in art"

  • Search OneSearch, the FIT Library's online catalog, using a word or phrase describing your topic and adding the phrase "pictorial works" or "in art" to find books that are highly illustrated.
For example: stores will get you books that might have some photos, charts or illustrations, but stores pictorial works will list those that are the most heavily illustrated.

"Mythology in art" will definitely find illustrated books; "mythology" books might be mostly or only text.
  • In the OneSearch record for a book, the field marked "description" might indicated "plates",  "ill." or "illus." (illustrated or illustrations) and "chiefly ill." means the book is mostly visuals.
  • Of course for some topics--such as designers, artists, art movements--virtually all the books in the FIT Library contain images, so don't worry if you can't find anything labeled "pictorial works".

Narrow Your Search Results

1. Enter your Subject Term or Keyword(s): for example REVIVALISM

2. Limit the SUBJECT to ARCHITECTURE (left side of the search results)

3. Limit your RESOURCE TYPE (Reference Materials, Articles, Books, etc..)
