Wikipedia Edit-a-thon: Citing Sources

This guide exists to support the work of FIT students participating in the March 8th, International Women's Day Wikipedia Edit-a-thon.

It's absolutely essential that you cite your sources in a Wikipedia article, as with any article you publish or research paper that you turn in. Wikipedia dictates no particular citation style but the citation templates that are available to Wikipedia editors closely resemble the Chicago Manual of Style author-date system.

Method 1 - Wikipedia Citation Templates (old school)

Method 1 requires use of the default "edit source" toolbar feature of Wikipedia.

This first video shows how to set up a page to accept citations as footnotes, and how to create a basic citation using the citation templates. This is the general method that many, if not most, Wikipedia editors use.

This second video demonstrates advanced features of the citation templates.

Method 2 - Ready-made Citations from Databases

I am calling this Method 2 and it is my personal favorite for using with library databases. Never include the proxy url.
