NYC Arts Programs

Percent for Art (NYC Department of Cultural Affairs)
Since 1982, NYC's Percent for Art law has required that 1% of the budget for eligible City-funded construction projects be spent on public artwork. Managed by the City’s Department of Cultural Affairs, this program has commissioned hundreds of site-specific projects in variety of media—painting, new technologies, lighting, mosaic, glass, textiles, sculpture, and works that are integrated into infrastructure and architecture—by artists whose sensibilities reflect the diversity of NYC.
DOT Art (NYC Department of Transportation)
DOT Art partners with community-based organizations and artists to present public art on DOT property in all five boroughs. Artists help transform the streets from ordinary to extraordinary with temporary interventions – colorful murals, dynamic projections and eye-catching sculptures. Public plazas, fences, barriers, bridges, step streets, and sidewalks serve as canvases for art in the public right of way.
Volunteer!! A guide to NYC's nonprofit and small arts organizations serving African American, Latino & Asian American communities
Designed to provide potential volunteers with easy access to information, each directory (African American, Latino, and Asian American) is divided into sections corresponding to the activities, purposes, and services offered. The sections are: Arts, Culture, and Education; Community Development and Housing; Health and Family; and Politics and Advocacy. The fourth directory is a new guide to small cultural organizations serving minority communities in NYC.
