The data analysis in many books on spending is based on information from the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Consumer Expenditure Surveys (CES). The data isn't always easy to interpret, but is available in multiple formats (.xls, PDF, etc) so that you can do your own analysis of the most up-to-date survey.
This table would would answer questions such as how much do households in specific income ranges (e.g. $70,000-99,999) spend on food (or even more specifically "fresh vegetables" or "processed vegetables") compared with other/all households in the U.S.
