""When researching a certain decade, century or era, it is often useful to start your research with materials written about that period, as opposed to materials from that time period.  Works about a particular point in time can offer background information, context, and expertise, filling in the gaps of your own knowledge.  In the study of history, such materials are known as secondary sources.  Materials from a particular time period are called primary sources.
