Many fashion designs begin as sketches. Sketching is the basic communication format of the world of fashion. Sketches convey details such as proportion, shaping, and location of design lines that determine pattern shapes. Some designers begin with sketches and others only sketch garments they've draped or patterned first, but all designs must be translated into this international form of communication.
