Citing Sources: APA

Databases - Basic format

All templates below are for resources found on Library databases. 

  • APA no longer requires database information for citations to magazine, newspaper and journal articles retrieved from databases (APA Manual  section 6.32 p. 193).  
  • ​If you are citing a technical or research report (often original research), include database information as shown in basic format & examples on this page.

Magazine article:

Author, A. A.  (year, month day). Article title: Subtitle. Magazine Title, Vol. number (issue number, if one), pages.

Scholarly journal article:

Author, A. A., & Author, B.B. (year). Article title: Subtitle. Journal Title, Vol. number (issue number), pages.  DOI, if available.

  • For scholarly journals, include issue number only if each issue begins with page 1. 
  • Include DOI, if one assigned to article.

Newspaper article:

Author, A. A. (year, month day). Article title: Subtitle. Newspaper Title, page numbers.

Report: 

Author, A. A. (year, month day). Title: Subtitle. Retrieved from Database name.
