Citing Sources: APA

One Author

One AuthorInclude:

  • author's last name (either in parentheses at the end or within the sentence)
  • year of publication
  • page number

Direct Quote:
(use quotes to indicate author's exact words)

"No elegant lady spending hundreds of dollars for a dress wants to push her way through a mobbed department store" (Cunningham,  2018, p. 19).

OR

Cunningham (2018) explains, "no elegant lady spending hundreds of dollars for a dress wants to push her way through a mobbed department store" (p. 19).


Paraphrasing:
(your words but someone else's idea)

No one spending a lot of money on clothes wants to have to shove their way through a crowd of people in a busy department store (Cunningham, 2018, p. 19).  

OR

Cunningham (2018) thought that no one spending a lot of money on clothes wants to have to shove their way through a crowd of people in a busy department store (p. 19).

Multiple Authors

Multiple AuthorsFor two authors:

"Of the women who signify their time in an enduring and memorable way, all, without exception, had a strong editorial presence" (Koda & Yohannan, 2009, p. 13).


For three to five authors:
(The first time they are mentioned in the text list all authors by last name.  If you cite from that same article again you can just use the first author's name and et al.)

First time: Equipment and raw materials are two vital elements for an organization to achieve its goals (Ferrell, Hirt, & Ferrell, 2016, p. 172).

 

Second time:  "Management is a process designed to achieve an organization's objectives by using its resources effectively" (Ferrell et al., 2016, p. 172).


For 6 or more authors:
(Use the first author's name and et al. each time)


The writer must grant stories a kind of solidity, "different as that may be from the solidity of everyday experience" (Mann et al., 1950, p. 3).

No Author

No AuthorIf there is no author mentioned (very common with websites) use a shortened version of the title. Include a year of publication. If there is no page number just leave it out.  

 


Article/Page from Website Examples:

Eleanor Lambert, the founder of the Council of Fashion Designers of America "was a pioneer in bringing American fashion and fashion designers to their present international stature" ("About CFDA," 2019).

OR

According to the "About CFDA" (2019) page on the Council of Fashion Designers of America website,  Eleanor Lambert was instrumental in bringing American fashion to the world stage.


Entire Website Example:
(use italics)

The CFDA has more than 500 members and every year gives out numerous awards and honors to designers as well as many student scholarships  (Council of Fashion Designers of America, 2019).

Different Authors, Same Last Name

Different Authors, Same Last NameProvide each author's first initial.  If they share the same first initial, provide the full first name. 

Although some medical ethicists claim that cloning will lead to designer children (R. Miller, 2008, p. 12), others note that the advantages for medical research outweigh this consideration (A. Miller, 2017, p. 46).

eBook

ebookSince the page number of ebooks are not consistent (i.e. they change depending on the device and font settings) you should not use page numbers for in-text citations.  You can use paragraph numbers if they are provided.
